These Castanea henryi hybrids were found in an Asian grocery store in VA . Asian grocery stores are often the only way to obtain obscure blight resistant, timber-type Chinese genetics, and this rare find of henryi hybrid in a DC area grocery store is special. In 10 years of looking out this is the only time I have seen these.

. These seeds are offered in quantities of 25, (30+ nuts will be sent

Uniform in shape and size, these run 55-60 nuts to a pound.  When eaten raw they are sweet and quite different from Chinese chestnuts, much more complex flavor. The pellicle peels easily when raw. These nuts have been float tested.

Charles Sprague Sargent has this to say about C. henryi
“This very distinct species is distributed from the neighborhood of Ningpo through the valley of the Yangtsze River as far west as Mt. Omei. On the mountains of western Hupeh and of eastern Szechuan it is common in woods. This chestnut grows to a larger size than any other Chinese species and trees from 20 to 25 meters [66 to 82 feet] tall with trunks from 1 to 3 meters [3.3 to 9.8 feet] are common. Occasionally trees 30 meters [98.4 feet] tall and 5 meters [16.4 feet] in girth of trunk are found. All the fruits we have seen contain a solitary nut, but it is probable that occasionally two occur, as they do in the American C. pumila. Here is a longer article by Dr Sandy
