Butternut is a tree native to eastern North America. Quite a vigorous tree, it was everywhere in Vermont, but not anymore... Butternut is under attack by a canker disease that is destroying the native populations.

Our seed is selected from what we believe to be pure butternut showing little to no sign of blight. Whether this is from resistance, isolation or other reasons is unknown. Butternut hybridizes easily with Japanese Walnut and Heartnut, so many trees thought to be survivors turn out to be hybrids. This article goes over the details. Planting butternut seedlings is important to help preserve the existing genetics before they are all gone.
